OVERVIEW

As parents you are left with little choice but to judge your child's progress with the marks and grades that they get. Sadly, your child's progress card hardly tells the true story. Many students passing out of schools today do not possess adequate skill sets to make them employable. Skills such as analytical thinking, communication, contextual problem solving, are essential in a real work environment. Alfie Kohn, a leading educationist and a thinker, in his research suggests “Three consistent effects of giving students grades – or leading them to focus on what grade they’ll get. First, their interest in the learning itself is diminished. Second, they come to prefer easier tasks – not because they’re lazy, but because they’re rational. After all, if the point is to get an A, your odds are better if you avoid taking intellectual risks. Third, students tend to think in a more superficial fashion – and to forget what they learned more quickly – when grades are involved." Marks and grades are not everything, it is essential that children learn to effectively solve real world problems to excel in what they do.
